AT 4:30pm I loaded my tribe into the good old mini-van and hit the interstate heading to the west. AT Exit 20 I headed North, that's the Kiln/Delilse exit.  Went about 4.5 miles then took a right on Fenton/Dedaux Road. 4.5 miles later there we were. Having never experienced a corn maze, we didn't' know what to expect.  My tribe is not easily pleased.  My  spouse whose interest is centered around things that have monitors and plug in, A teenage daughter whose interest center around her friends and anything gloomy, "tweenage" boy, who still likes weird stuff but is becoming too cool to admit it, and a 3 year old whose interests have yet to be figured out but we do know it wont last long. I was a bit leery, as it's hard to please all members of this group.  I had called ahead to get firm directions and was greeted by a friendly person who already eased my mind. When my plans were reveled to the tribe, I immediately received the common grumbles, "what?" , " what's the big deal", and of course , "mooooooooom, it's Friday night..."
Upon pulling  in I immediately knew it was a good plan and at least some of them would come out not resenting me for a few minutes. They had clearly marked signs, ample parking and it was free, this pleased the spouse. We entered the check in building, "The Pumpkin Barn" . It was  nice, clean and had plentiful friendly staff. The admission price was $10.00 for 12 and up, $7.00 for  ages 5-11, 4 and under are free.
The spouse balked a bit about the cost to stumble thru some corn for 15 minutes, boy was he wrong, and let me tell you why.  This Corn Maze is far more than tripping around a corn field.  First it's a 10 acre extremely well designed and unique maze, if you look at the arial view you can see an animal in it.  In my opinion the maze alone is  worth the fee, but there's more than just the maze.  There's an "easy" ( or so they say) side, I think it was about 1.5 miles, and a "difficult' ( I didn't' make it) side. The process goes like this. You sign up, choose to purchase glow sticks or a cheat sheet. You go into the main pumpkin barn and rest on nicely baled hay while you receive a welcome speech, description, details, and a safety speech. You are also given a punch card. You then have the option to partake in a snack or beverage from the concession prior to your adventure.  You enter the maze with your punch card, glow sticks, flashlights ( depending on the time), and begin your trek. The trails are clearly marked with yellow tape, but you don't know which ones lead to no where or are simply a loop. Each time you reach a marker post, you use the whole punch to mark your card. I let my tribe participate by each time we came to a crossroad each member took a turn in making the decision, even the 3 year old.
This led to grumbles and laughter when other members felt we might be taking a wrong turn. It took us about 1 hour and 25 minutes to get thru the easy side, consisting of 6 posts. At that point for the good of the family I decided, the spouse, the 3 year old and myself should tackle other aspects of the place, while the 2 older ones tackled the "difficult" maze.  While the 2 formerly grumpy now excited kids headed off into to the tall stalks with flashlights and glow sticks in hand.  We took the baby to see the animals; horses, bunnies, pigs, they got it.  We grabbed a very reasonably priced snack from the concession stand and headed to the pic nic tables while the youngest played on the horsey style swings.  Then back into the pumpkin barn where our 3 year old joined at least 6 other kids ranging from 18 months to 10 years old in playing in the hay, and crawling thru the pop up play tunnel.  The younger ones all grabbed a trike fashioned as a tractor, truck or car and headed off to the trike track, and had a race.  Then we strode over to the hay maze, which was perfect for the youngest to go alone. We saw the pumpkin chunkin contraption but didn't' partake, next time we will for sure. The goal is to place corn and gourds in a huge ground mounted sling and attempt to shoot it thru a whole in a piece of plywood across the yard a good bit.  The older 2 still in the maze, we, now affectionately known as the "quitters" jumped aboard the cleanest hay ride I have ever been on. Nicely bailed hay on a railed flat bed, driven by friendly staff after a safety speech. We rode around and all aboard had a good time, discussing the stars, you can now only see so beautifully from a rural view such as the one found here.  The timing was perfect we offloaded from the hay ride the same time the "hero's" emerged from the maze.  We all filled out our punch cards to be entered in a drawing, and took full use of the cleanest port-a-potties I have ever seen. We opted not to purchase any pumpkins or gourds from the pumpkin patch and instead loaded into the van. But not before thanking our hosts.  When we got to the trusty minivan I anxiously awaited the reviews of my impossible to please tribe.  The first came from my 3 year old, " No go ! " It was clear he was giving it a 2 thumbs up.  We all laughed,  my 12 year old boy then said, "Mom, that was way cool....", The response from my teenage daughter just about took my breath away when she said, " yeah man, that was cool, I would do it again for sure."  ( you see it's against the laws of nature for them to agree on anything other than what terrible outings I plan).  Now for the final blow, the spouse.... " I really had a good time, it was a great evening."  I can't break my arm patting myself on the back, after all the fine folks at Southern Promiseland Farm, LLC, made it all possible, so I settled for a quiet smile of content as I knew I just spent 3 hours and 50 minutes with my electronics addicted,  age varied family and every single one of us truly enjoyed it. It's a rare find, a wonderful experience and at an acceptable price for all there is to do. Granted there is some damage to certain areas of the field by Hurricane Ivan.-  SK 10-15-04
